New COO Taking the Helm at Fairmont Hot Springs Resort

February 1, 2010 – Fairmont Hot Springs, B.C. – Fairmont Hot Springs Resort, the B.C. Rockies family vacation destination, is pleased to announce the appointment of Dean Prentice as the new chief operating officer of the resort.

Prentice is making the move across B.C.’s Columbia Valley from Panorama Mountain Village where he has served as the director of food & beverage and lodging for the past four years.

“We have spent the past four months looking for the right person to take on the challenge of heading up operations here at Fairmont Hot Springs Resort,” Dave Bessey, a partner and CEO of the resort says. “With skiing, golfing, lodging, gourmet restaurants and the natural mineral hot springs all within the same resort, we needed to find someone with a wide variety of experience to guide our team. Dean Prentice brings 25 years of experience in the hospitality industry to Fairmont Hot Springs Resort and we were very fortunate to find him.”

Prentice officially takes the reins at Fairmont Hot Springs Resort today.

“I’m looking forward to taking the next step in my career at Fairmont Hot Springs Resort,” Prentice says. “I have a passion for the experiential resort industry and Fairmont Hot Springs Resort has a deep connection with many families that have been going there for generations, so It is a privilege to join that special tradition.”

Prentice will be involved in expanding the health and wellness offerings at the resort, in addition to directing the operations of the 137 room Lodge and conference centre, the ski hill and the resort’s three golf courses.  

“There is an incredible opportunity to expand health and wellness services,” Prentice says, “Health and wellness travel is one of tourism's biggest growth areas and with its own all natural mineral hot springs, Fairmont Hot Springs Resort is perfectly positioned to offer travellers the three 'R's – rest, relaxation and rejuvenation.”

Prentice completed his degree in Travel and Tourism at Seneca College in 1987. For the past 25 years he has worked throughout Canada in the hospitality industry for a variety of companies including Delta, Radisson and Holiday Inn Hotels. He also graduated from the National Institute of Golf Management in 2000 and has served as clubhouse manager at Greystone Golf Club and director of hospitality at the prestigious Glen Abbey Golf Club in Oakville, Ont.

Fairmont Hot Springs Resort is also pleased to announce the promotion of Peter Smith as executive vice president of the resort. During the search for a chief operating officer, Smith worked as the acting vice president of operations.

“Peter’s hard work and dedication guided this resort through the search for a new COO,” Bessey says. “Thanks to his expert guidance we are now in a very strong position to move forward this year and we are very excited for him to take on another permanent senior leadership role.”

Smith’s new duties as vice president will be in addition to his role as director of golf operations at Fairmont Hot Springs Resort.

For 10 years prior to his arrival at the resort in 2009, Smith was director of golf for Greywolf at Panorama and was also the head professional and managed The Springs Golf and Country Club in Radium, B.C. In addition he was named Golf Professional of the Year by the BCPGA in 2005.
