The Vernon Morning Star, August 29, 2007 Gala raises $32,648 Donning their finest attire, more than 250 people rose to the occasion Saturday for a night of fun, food and fundraising. Under starry Okanagan skies, the Rise's Moonlight Serenade charity gala raked in $32,648 for the Vernon Hospice House's Grow The Dream campaign. Renowned a cappella group The Nylons had guests moving, even after a gourmet dinner. The evening also featured an auction featuring a bevy of events and gift packages. With "Live it up" the theme of the night, auction items included a dinner for 10 served by Vernon Mayor Wayne Lippert, a weekend for two in Palm Springs and a train ride to Jasper. "It went excellent, we had a night to remember," said Leona Snider, president and chief executive officer of The Rise. "The guests had a great time and got up and danced with The Nylons. It was great, better than we could have imagined." Local businesses also donated many gift packages and The Rise itself got in on the giving by providing ice wine for the champagne reception and memberships for the soon-to-open Fred Couples Signature Golf Course. Vernon and District Hospice Society president Gladys Fraser thanked The Rise for hosting the fundraiser. "I think the evening was enjoyed by all and it was a very good opportunity for the Vernon and District Hospice Society to reach some of the people we haven't been able to reach," said Fraser. "We were really pleased Leona and The Rise were such great hosts for the evening and chose the Grow The Dream campaign as the benefactor." The society is looking to raise $3 million to expand Hospice House from six to 12 beds. The facility provides care for terminally ill residents of the North Okanagan, as well as their families. Presently, the campaign has raised almost $2 million towards the construction project.
