WHITTAKERS AT PENDER HARBOUR Developer Peter Ruben considers himself twice lucky after making two great discoveries. The first was when he found what is believed to be the site of a sunken treasure ship off the coast of Panama, and the second was when he spotted the site for Whittakers at Pender Harbour. “As a sailor and lover of the ocean first, and a developer second, I didn’t choose Whittakers – Whittakers chose me,” Mr. Ruben says. “Its location in this majestic and serene harbour is unparalleled along the Sunshine Coast.” Whittakers is a luxury, master-planned resort community with an oceanfront lifestyle that includes a deep-water marina and a private slip for each of the 25 custom homes. The marina is also the retirement home of the 47-foot Caledonia II, aboard which Mr. Ruben pinpointed the site of the French privateer Maurepas, which sank in 1698 carrying gold and silver worth an estimated $60-million (it remains buried under several metres of silt and sand). Whittakers residents can now partake of the Caledonia’s colourful history with sunset cruises. “When it comes to sailing and an appreciation of life on the water, Whittakers is as good as it gets,” says Mr. Ruben, who has a home in the development. The homes at Whittakers, which is about 30 minutes’ drive north of Sechelt on a 14-acre peninsula, were designed by architect Drew Rose of Still Point Architecture. Mr. Rose, who specializes in coastal properties, created two design styles, dubbed West Coast Arts and Crafts and the modern West Coast Contemporary, fitted to the site’s lowbank frontage and unique topology. Each house has panoramic harbour views and 15 metres of private frontage. Whittakers’ homeowners can also use the amenities at nearby Rockwater Secret Cove Resort, including restaurant, swimming pool, beach and massage spa, as well as float plane dock. They can also take advantage of the services of Rockwater Concierge, such as house cleaning, laundry, groceries and catering, as well as property management, rental management, security and service checks. Rockwater Properties is a partnership between Mr. Ruben, who is chairman of Alberta Mining Corp. in Calgary, and hotelier Kevin Toth, former general manager of Fairmount Chateau Whistler and Jasper Park Lodge.
