Peaceful, Easy Feeling A Calgary designer strikes a balance between country and chic at a resort getaway in Kimberley, B.C. Let There Be Light: The lamps in the living area and bedroom replicate candlelight with their sleek glass cylinders mounted atop iron framework, while the pendants in the kitchen complement the scheme. "It's a modern twist on having it not completely rustic. It adds that little punch of colour and design." Open Sesame: "This scheme is all about the dark neutrals. It creates a really warm feeling... The finish is not too dark, though, so it allows some of the wood grain to show through. This shows the character of the cabinetry, especially on a flat-panel door." Window on the World: Dressing a two-storey window can be tricky, but Raimondi made light of the situation by placing the curtain rod at the natural break at the mid-point. "The main thing for the upper windows, in the vaulted areas, we really want to capture the views. The sheers give you the softness yet allow the light to pass through and give you some variation." The Scheme of Things: "The resort is very spa-inspired, so instead of having an über rustic look, this has more of a softer flavour. We went with quite earthy colours, but again, they are more spa-related, softer colours. There are two palettes: this one is a little more of the chocolate flavour, while the other is more of the soft slate, green-silver palette." ___________ Marrying calm (retreat) and crisp (spa) in the interior spaces of Mountain Spirit Resort & Spa was the design goal of Andrea Raimondi, president of Calgary-based Ingenium Design Group Inc. "This project, it's all about simplicity. I think that's what makes it feel more like a retreat," she says.
