Wine Access 2009 The Cellars at the Rise
The Cellars at the Rise Through her Okanagan Hills Development Company, entrepreneur Leona Snider is developing this winery as one of the attractions to draw people to a $1-billion hilltop resort and residential development at the western edge of Vernon. The winery is being dug partially into the rock, using the natural slope for gravity-handling of the wines and using the natural cellar temperatures for cooling. The first 3.03 hectares of what should grow to a 16.18 hectares organic vineyard were planted in 2005 with pinot noir and riesling. While this is at the northern end of the Okanagan, the vines are on a steep, south-facing slope, well-exposed to the sun. The winery’s initial vintages have been made with purchased grapes.
