The Cellars at the Rise

Through her Okanagan Hills Development Company, entrepreneur Leona Snider is developing this winery as one of the attractions to draw people to a $1-billion hilltop resort and residential development at the western edge of Vernon. The winery is being dug partially into the rock, using the natural slope for gravity-handling of the wines and using the natural cellar temperatures for cooling. The first 3.03 hectares of what should grow to a 16.18 hectares organic vineyard were planted in 2005 with pinot noir and riesling. While this is at the northern end of the Okanagan, the vines are on a steep, south-facing slope, well-exposed to the sun. The winery’s initial vintages have been made with purchased grapes.
